Car Hits Pedestrians near Copacabana Beach

01/19/2018 (Brazil) - According to local media sources on Friday, 19 January, a baby was killed and more than a dozen people injured when a car ploughed through pedestrians near Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred around midnight local time (0200 UTC). Initial reports indicate that the driver was either impaired due to alcohol consumption and/or suffered an epileptic fit at the wheel. Further information is awaited.

Travellers are advised to avoid the area immediately surrounding the beach promenade due to the ongoing situation. Travellers are further advised to heed all directives from security personnel and to monitor local media for further updates to the incident and local traffic diversions.
