01/18/2018 (Netherlands) - According to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), on Thursday, 18 January, the whole country is experiencing heavy winds of up to 115KPH (70MPH) which are particularly severe in the coastal provinces. Schiphol Airport (AMS) has cancelled all flights, and the national rail provider NS has cancelled all trains from 1100 hours (1000UTC) onwards due to too much debris on the rail and overhead electricity cables being damaged. A similar situation is occurring on the tram lines. Many motorways have one or more lanes blocked off due to lorries that were blown over and there are reports of several buildings having the roof blown off.

Those in the region are advised to monitor local media sources for further weather-related updates and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Travellers should anticipate a weather-related disruption in the area in the immediate to medium term and should factor this into itineraries, allowing additional time and planning alternative routes where possible. Ensure vehicles are well maintained and drive with caution, contact airline provider before heading to the airport and expect train and tram cancellations.
