01/18/2018 (Egypt) - According to local media sources on Wednesday, 18 January, one police officer was killed and 4 others injured in an explosion in the Sebeka area along the Al Arish-Al Qantara Sharqiya road. Reports indicate that the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) which was remotely detonated while the police were on patrol in their vehicle. Those injured have been hospitalised. Local security forces have closed the road and are conducting operations in the area. This incident comes during intense counter-terror operations which have resulted in the killing of a militant commander and the arrest of 22 militants on Wednesday. During the arrests, a high quantity of explosives and bomb-making materials has been seized.
The threat from militancy in the region remains high. Those with operationally-critical travel needs in the Sinai region should subject all movement to a location-specific threat assessment and strict security risk management procedures. Travellers should monitor local media sources for security-related updates and minimise time spent in the vicinity of security forces patrols and positions, as these are regularly targeted in attacks.
