01/17/2018 (Mozambique) - According to local sources on Wednesday, 17 January, a militant attack on an administrative post in Olumbe, Palma district in the North East of the country has killed at least five people and injured a further 11. A second attack has also been reported in the village of Quissengue, with 32 houses destroyed. The militant threat is reportedly increasing in the area, with 24 suspected militants arrested in the region on Tuesday, 9 January. It is currently unclear whether the attacks have been carried out by the Islamist group that recently attacked police installations in the neighbouring district of Mocimboa da Praia.

Those in Palma district should be aware of the increased security and risk of further violence in the region and are advised to review security arrangements accordingly to ensure they remain commensurate with the local threat environment. Travellers should monitor local media and liaise with in-country sources for further updates on the security situation in their particular area of operations. Due to the risk of further attacks on security forces, travellers are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of police patrols and positions in order to mitigate the risk of exposure to incidental violence.
