Prominent Politician Killed in Mitrovica: Unrest Possible

01/17/2018 (Kosovo) - According to national media sources on Wednesday, 17 January, the politician Oliver Ivanovichas been killed following a drive-by shooting on Tuesday, 16 January. Oliver Ivanovichas was facing a retrial on war crimes charges over the 1990s Kosovo conflict and his assassination has sparked fears of increased ethnic tensions in the region. It is not known who is behind the killing.
Those in the region are advised to exercise a heightened level of caution in the immediate term due to the possibility of unrest. Travellers should avoid all demonstrations and security operations due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence as well as security forces crowd dispersal. Monitor local media sources for active protests and update your travel plans accordingly.
