Several Killed Following Protests in Mrauk U, Rakhine State

01/17/2018 (Myanmar) - According to local media sources on Wednesday 17 January, nine people have been killed and a further 12 injured following protests in the city of Mrauk U in Rakhine State. Reports indicate that the fatalities and injuries were the results of protesters clashing with police who utilised live ammunition to disperse them. The protests reportedly attracted several thousand people and occurred following a decision to ban the celebration of a local holiday. The protesters hurled rocks and other projectiles at a local administrative building. The police opened fire on the protesters following their efforts to destroy police vehicles. Those wounded have been hospitalized.
