Mud Volcano Eruption Reported in Shamakhi district

01/17/2018 (Azerbaijan) - According to local media reports on Wednesday, 17 January, a mud volcano in the village of Gushchu, in Azerbaijan's Shamakhi district started erupting at around 0100hrs (2100 UTC). The volcano is reported to have ejected mud lava to a height of 10 m (32.8 feet) which has so far spread over about 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) of land. Mud volcanoes form when pressurised gas is forced to the surface from oil and gas reserves hidden deep beneath land and sea in the Caspian region. A number of homes in the immediate area are understood to have been evacuated.

Those in the area are advised to ensure that they are familiarised with local emergency protocols. Clients operating in Azerbaijan are also advised to closely monitor developments through local media as mud flows produced by volcanic eruptions can disrupt air travel within the region.
