01/16/2018 (Sudan) - International media sources on Tuesday, 16 January report that security forces in Khartoum have used force to disperse anti-austerity protests taking place in the centre of the city. Police reportedly struck demonstrators with batons and fired tear gas into crowds. It is currently unclear whether the protest has finished. The demonstrations were called to protest rising prices in the country following the government's imposition of tough economic measures. Previous anti-austerity demonstrations have also been met with a strong security response and have sometimes ended in violence.

Those in Khartoum should be aware of the potential for further unrest in the city and minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence as well as heavy-handed crowd dispersal operations. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the case and to remain apprised of any planned or spontaneous protests in the city and associated travel disruption.
