01/16/2018 (Guatemala) - According to local media reports on Tuesday, 16 January, a protester affiliated to the Comite de Desarrollo Campesino (CODECA) farmer group has been killed by a lorry in the locality of El Progreso, department of Jutiapa, as he was attempting to block a motorway with other demonstrators in protest against an ongoing corruption row. CODECA has called for nationwide demonstrations demanding the resignation of the current President Jimmy Morales. After a series of political measures last year, Jimmy Morales has been accused of corruption by multiple local actors in the country.

Clients in Guatemala are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of any political gathering. All demonstrations and political gatherings should be avoided due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence, and police crowd dispersal activities. Travellers should be mindful of the increased security measures and immediately heed any directives issued by authorities. Monitor local media sources for further updates on the protests and associated disruption.
