01/16/2018 (Paraguay) - According to local media reports on Tuesday, 16 January, riots have been reported in the vicinity of the Partido Colorado political party in the vicinity of the 25 de Mayo street. Sources indicate that a crowd was confronted by the security forces when they attempted to raid the political party's headquarters. Protests follow a rise in public transportation fares recently implemented by the authorities. It has been indicated that a member of the security forces has been injured in the clashes. Although the crowd has been dispersed, anti-riot police squads remain deployed in the vicinity of the area.
Those in Asuncion are advised to avoid the vicinity of all political gatherings and all unrest in order to avoid unruly crowd behaviour and potentially heavy-handed crowd dispersal operations by police. Personnel in Paraguay are advised to monitor media reports for updates on the ongoing political unrest in the country and adhere to any directives issued by the authorities.
