01/16/2018 (Brazil) - According to local media reports on Monday, 15 January, demonstrations were held in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul on Sunday, 14 January, in order to show support for the former President Lula da Silva. More demonstrations are to be expected countrywide as the date of the trial, due on 24 January, approaches. Lula da Silva is being investigated on corruption charges related to a series of bribes accepted by state-owned oil company Petrobras in return for awarding over-inflated contracts to construction firms such as Odebrecht.

Clients are advised to remain clear of any political rallies or demonstrations due to the risk of incidental violence, opportunistic crime, and heavy-handed police response. Travellers should monitor local media for further information regarding the protests and any resultant disruption to overland travel.
