01/15/2018 (Thailand) - According to national media on Monday, 15 January, at least one person was killed and seven others were injured after an armoured personnel carrier (APC) lost control and crashed into several vehicles and stalls in the Muang district of Pattani province. The vehicle mounted the footpath near the Krue Se mosque and ploughed into stalls and parked motorcycles on Route 42 Pattani-Narathiwat Highway in the Tayong Luloh tambong. An initial inquiry suggested the vehicle, which was travelling at high speed, burst a tyre and the driver lost control on the slippery road.
Self-driving is not recommended for travellers in Thailand unless one is familiar with the driving environment. Road conditions may be considered substandard compared to those in more developed countries, while traffic and safety signs, as well as street lights, are inadequate outside urban centres. Travellers unfamiliar with local driving conditions should consider the use of private hire vehicles and professional drivers from reputable travel providers. Travellers in the province and other parts of the Deep South are advised to maintain good situational awareness at all times and subject all overland travel to comprehensive security risk management protocols.
