01/15/2018 (Pakistan) - According to international media reports on Monday, 15 January, four Pakistani soldiers have been killed following an exchange of fire with Indian troops near the border village of Kotli in Pakistani-controlled Azad Kashmir. Pakistani and Indian military officials have both claimed the other party instigated the gunfire. Associated unrest and further clashes may occur in the area in response to the deaths. In a separate incident on Monday, five suspected militants were also killed by Indian troops after entering Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir. Cross-border skirmishes occur frequently in Jammu and Kashmir and Azad Kashmir, often resulting in military and civilian casualties.

Travellers should avoid the affected area in the immediate term due to the ongoing security operations and risk of further clashes. Those in Azad Kashmir are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of the border with India due to the military operations in the area. Travellers are advised to liaise with local security officials and trusted security providers to avoid zones deemed unstable or with active security operations. Contingency measures should also be continually reviewed and updated accordingly so as to remain commensurate with the local threat environment.
