Ten Government Soldiers Killed in Al-Shabaab Attacks on Elka and Qalimow Villages, Middle Shebelle Region

01/15/2018 (Somalia) - According to local media on Monday, 15 January, ten Somali Government soldiers and three al-Shabaab militants have been killed in clashes near Elka and Qalimow villages, Middle Shabelle region, on 14 January. The militants reportedly launched surprise attacks on the villages and captured the army barracks in Elka; both locations were later retaken by Somali Government troops.

Travellers should be aware that Somalia is considered an extreme risk operational environment and, as such, all travel should be undertaken with the strictest possible journey management protocols in place. Clients should ensure that personnel and site security measures are continuously reviewed so as to remain commensurate to the prevailing local threat environment. All operationally-critical movement outside of secure compounds should be conducted in coordination with a reputable security provider in coordination with security forces and local authorities.
