01/15/2018 (Bangladesh) - According to local media sources, authorities in Dhaka are anticipating heightened unrest during upcoming hearings in the corruption trial of former Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson, Khaleda Zia, from Tuesday, 16 January until Thursday, 18 January. Zia is facing a number of graft and sedition charges and is also suspected of involvement in a number of violent incidents, including inciting a bomb attack on a bus during anti-government protests in 2015. Demonstrations are likely to take place in the vicinity of Special Judge Court 5, as well as at the BNP headquarters in the Naya Paltan area of Dhaka.

Those in Bangladesh should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of demonstration locations and plan itineraries accordingly. Travellers are advised to avoid the vicinity of the aforementioned areas and all political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence. Travellers should be aware that protests in Bangladesh have the potential to become violent with little warning, often attracting a heavy-handed response from government forces.
