01/15/2018 (Bolivia) - According to local media sources, prominent trade unions have called upon members to strike in El Alto and Cochabamba on Monday, 15 and Tuesday, 16 January, respectively. Public sector workers are acting in response to recent changes to the country's penal code that will result in the criminalisation of professional misconduct. Unionists are reportedly planning to erect roadblocks on main traffic routes in the cities and are expected to cause significant travel disruption. Recent related industrial action in La Paz resulted in clashes with police.

Though the industrial action expected to remain peaceful, clients in El Alto and Cochabamba are advised to avoid the vicinity of all political gatherings in order to limit exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, heavy-handed police response, and opportunistic crime. Travellers conducting overland travel in the areas should anticipate significant disruption and plan alternative routes to avoid roadblocks. Monitor local media sources for further updates.
