Fatalities Reported following Twin Suicide Blasts near Sahet Al-Tayaran Square in Baghdad

01/15/2018 (Iraq) - According to local media sources on Monday, 15 January, two explosions have been reported in the Rusafa area of Baghdad. It is indicated that two suicide attackers detonated their charges amongst a group of construction workers at Sahet Al-Tayaran Square. Preliminary reports put the death toll at 26, with another 90 injured, but this is yet to be confirmed. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Those in Baghdad are advised to avoid the Khadra area in the immediate term due to the ongoing emergency response operations and risk of secondary attacks. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident. Due to the continuing threat from militant activity, travel in Baghdad should be coordinated with security forces following a localised threat assessment and undertaken with strict security risk management measures in place, including the use of armed security escorts.
