Demonstrations against Contaminating Factory Planned in Loma Grande, Cordillera Department, 16 January

01/15/2018 (Paraguay) - According to emerging social media feeds on Monday, 15 January, environmentalist and community groups from Loma Grande, Cordillera department, are calling for demonstrations on Tuesday, 16 January. Protests will demand the closure of a metal processing factory in the area. Reports indicate that the factory, specialised in the production of silicon carbide, has recently been investigated for exceeding appropriate toxicity levels in their production plant.

Those near the aforementioned area are advised to avoid the vicinity of all political gatherings and all unrest in order to mitigate against unruly crowd behaviour and potentially heavy-handed crowd dispersal operations by police. Keep apprised of further developments by monitoring local sources.
