Fresh Clashes in Tunis during Demonstrations to mark the Seventh Anniversary of the Jasmine Revolution

01/15/2018 (Tunisia) - According to international media sources on Sunday, 14 January, new clashes erupted today in Tunis between demonstrators and security forces. Sources indicate that the police used tear gas in order to disperse the crowds. Today is the seventh anniversary of the deposition of the country's dictator Ben Ali during what was called the Jasmine Revolution. Anti-austerity demonstrations started on Monday, 8 January, and have continued almost every day since then. Sources indicate that multiple people have been killed in clashes with the police during the recent wave of unrest and several hundred have been arrested.

Travellers in Tunisia should expect a heightened security presence after days of violent protests over austerity measures in towns across the country. Clients in country are advised to avoid the vicinity of any large political gatherings in order to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and consequent heavy-handed security response. Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
