One Killed and Many Injured after Tourist Speedboat Engine Explodes off Phi Phi Island, Muang District

01/14/2018 (Thailand) - According to local media on Sunday, 14 January, one person has been killed and many others injured after the engine of a speedboat carrying 26 Chinese tourists exploded off Phi Phi Island, Muang district. The passengers and surviving crew jumped off the boat and were recovered by emergency services. The boat exploded after the captain noticed an oil leak near one of the engines and began to investigate.
Those intending to travel by boat in Thailand should ensure, where possible, to use reputable service providers that abide by international safety standards. Travellers are advised to assess the safety standards of vessel operators prior to making reservations, ensuring the availability of life jackets and noting the locations of emergency exit points on vessels.
