01/14/2018 (Nigeria) - According to local media sources on Sunday, 14 January, the Benue State Government has imposed extraordinary security measures in Makurdi following violent protests carried out by Hausa ethnic youths. The State Security Council has ordered the deployment of government troops to the area, and a curfew is in place between 1800hrs (1700 UTC) and 0600hrs (0500 UTC) until further notice. The recent unrest occurred in response to killings perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen and resulted in significant damage to local properties and vehicles. It is indicated that localised protests occurred in the Wadata, Wurukum, Northbank and Angwan-Jukun areas of the city.

Those in Makurdi are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the unrest and to remain apprised of any associated disruption in the area. Clients should be mindful of the increased security presence and heed any directives issued by authorities, including adhering to curfew orders. Travellers should avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Nigeria due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence as well as aggressive police crowd dispersal operations.
