01/14/2018 (Egypt) - According to international media on Sunday, 14 January, masked gunmen have fatally shot a Christian man in North Sinai Governorate. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, however, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant - Sinai Province (ISIL-SP) militant group frequently targets Coptic Christian Egyptians. The attack comes as President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi issues a decree to extend the national state of emergency and a partial curfew in North Sinai Governorate and north-eastern Cairo for an additional three months.

Those in Egypt are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the state of emergency and any associated security operations in their area and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Due to the elevated threat from terrorism in Egypt, travellers should exercise a heightened level of vigilance and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to security forces. Travellers should be aware of the potential for unrest related to the imposition of the state of emergency and are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of any demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence.
