01/14/2018 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - According to local media on Sunday, 14 January, Democratic Republic of Congo troops have begun a military offensive in the city of Beni, North Kivu province, on 13 January. The offensive is aimed at the Ugandan Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militant group which is suspected to be responsible for an attack that killed 15 UN peacekeepers in December 2017. Beni residents reported sounds of gunfire and explosions in the city; no injuries are reported at this time.
Those in North Kivu are advised to avoid any security operations in their area of operation and to monitor local media sources for further updates. Instability persists across the eastern regions of the DRC, particularly North Kivu province, and numerous militant groups are known to operate in the region. Essential travel in the region should be subjected to the strictest possible security management procedures, including contracting armed private security and using vehicles equipped with radios. Personnel operating in the DRC are advised to regularly review their crisis management plans and security measures to ensure they remain commensurate with the evolving local threat environment.
