Security Operation Underway after IED Found in Maloora Area of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir

01/14/2018 (India) - According to local media sources on Sunday, 14 January, an improvised explosive device (IED) has been detected by security forces in the Maloora area of Srinagar district, Jammu and Kashmir. A large security operation is underway to investigate and a bomb disposal squad has been deployed. The surrounding area has been cordoned off and residents have been evacuated. Members of Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) are suspected to have planted the device. This is the third IED recovered in the area in recent weeks, as well as one IED explosion which killed four police officers in nearby Sopore on 6 January.

Those in Jammu and Kashmir State are advised to avoid Maloora and surrounding areas in the immediate term due to the ongoing security operation and heed any directives issued by security forces. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and observe any extraordinary security measures which may be implemented, including curfews.
