01/14/2018 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - Media reports on Sunday, 14 January, indicate that several people were killed in a night-time attack on a village in the Beni region of North Kivu province. The villagers were reportedly killed by unidentified assailants who managed to avoid military positions in the local area. Although it is currently unclear which group carried out the murders, similar attacks on villages in the Beni area were blamed on the Ugandan militant group, Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). Active in the region since 1995, the ADF have been previously blamed for a number of attacks that have taken place on National Highway 4, between Beni, in North Kivu, and the Ituri region.
Personnel with operationally critical operations in the region are advised to subject all movements to thorough journey management protocols following a localised risk assessment.
