01/13/2018 (Kenya) - According to unconfirmed social media reports on Saturday, 13 January, a convoy of buses protected by police vehicles has been attacked by suspected Al Shabaab militants in Nyongoro, Lamu country, on the road between Lamu town and Malindi. The buses drove past the ambush successfully, however one civilian was killed and a number of police officers injured in the attack. Two police escort vehicles were also destroyed. Al Shabaab militants often attack buses in this area despite security escorts.

Due to the persistent militant threat, travellers in Lamu County are advised to exercise a heightened level of situational awareness and immediately report any suspicious activity or items to security forces. All overland travel in the border regions should be coordinated with security forces in conjunction with a localised threat assessment and strict security measures.
