01/13/2018 (Niger) - According to local media sources, protests against the proposed 2018 government budget are expected in Niamey and other urban centres on Sunday, 14 January. In Niamey, protesters likely to gather at Toumo Square and Place de la Concertation, in front of the National Assembly. A heightened security force presence can be anticipated across the capital on the day, increasing the likelihood of the protest being forcibly dispersed. The controversial budget will create new land and inheritance taxes, and increase levies on goods and services, raising the price of basic utilities.

Those within Niamey and other urban centres on the aforementioned date are advised to avoid the vicinity of such demonstrations in order to mitigate against exposure to unruly crowd behaviour and potentially heavy-handed police crowd dispersal measures. Clients are further advised to anticipate localised travel disruptions resulting from a heightened security presence.
