01/13/2018 (Togo) - According to international media on Friday, 12 January, a coalition of 14 opposition parties will hold an anti-government protest in Lome on Saturday, 13 January. The protesters are demanding constitutional reforms, and negotiations with the government have made little progress. Protests have continued on the issue for a number of months which have occasionally resulted in clashes with police and a number of deaths on both sides. An additional protest exclusively for women has been organised in Lome for 20 January.

Those in Togo should be aware of the ongoing campaign of protests in the country and factor this into their operations and security plans. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Togo due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence and should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any planned or spontaneous demonstrations in their particular area of operations. Mobile communications networks have occasionally been disrupted during protest activity and travellers should factor this into their communication plans, utilising devices not reliant on mobile networks.
