Protests Expected in Bamako during Teachers' Strike on 15-19 January

01/13/2018 (Mali) - According to local media sources on Saturday, 13 January, protests are expected in Bamako from Monday, 15 to Friday, 19 January, in relation to an industrial action by teachers. Teachers are striking to demand recognition of their civil-servant status and higher wages. Police on 12 January used tear gas to break up a related protest outside the National Assembly; further protests are likely to be forcibly dispersed by the authorities.

Travellers are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings in Mali due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence. Clients should expect transport disruptions in the vicinity of protests and adjust their itineraries accordingly.
