01/13/2018 (Guatemala) - According to local media sources, the Comite de Desarrollo Campesino (CODECA) farmers' union and other activists are intending to stage protests in central Guatemala City on Sunday, 14 and Monday, 15 January. Crowds intend to gather at 1000hrs (1600 UTC) outside the National Congress building to denounce corruption and the alleged involvement of President Jimmy Morales in a financing scandal. The demonstration will coincide with a congressional session that Morales is expected to address. Further demonstrations are planned at 0800hrs (1400 UTC) on Monday in urban centres across the country.

Clients in Guatemala City are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of the National Congress on the aforementioned date. All demonstrations and political gatherings should be avoided due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence, and police crowd dispersal activities. Travellers should be mindful of the increased security measures and immediately heed any directives issued by authorities. Monitor local media sources for further updates on the protests and associated disruption.
