10/17/2017 (Peru) - According to local media sources on Tuesday, 17 October, teachers from multiple regions including Cusco, Piura, Arequipa, Pasco and Lambayeque are planning strike action and demonstrations on Friday, 20 October. New protests will be held over recent disagreements on an ongoing row between Unitary Education Workers Syndicate of Peru (SUTEP) leaders and the Ministry of Education.
Clients are advised to avoid the vicinity of political demonstrations in order to limit exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, incidental violence, and opportunistic crime. Protests in major urban centres are often met with a strong response from security forces using heavy-handed crowd dispersal techniques such as tear gas. Travellers should heed all directives issued by authorities immediately. Those operating in-country are advised to closely monitor strike-related developments through local media and review overland travel arrangements should unrest lead to the blocking of regional travel routes.
