Turkish Security Council Plans to Suspend Flights to Iraqi Kurdistan

10/17/2017 (Turkey) - According to regional media sources on Tuesday, 17 October, the Turkish Security Council has proposed a suspension of the country's airspace for flights going to or from Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) territories following the escalation of tensions in the last few days regarding the region's sovereignty between Kurdish and Iraqi government forces. In addition, Government authorities will hand over control of the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing between the southeastern Sirnak province and Iraqi Kurdistan.

Clients are advised to review their journey itineraries into southeastern provinces of the country given the ongoing tensions experienced in the neighbouring KRG and a strong presence of militant groups in the area. Those with operationally-critical movements in the southeast of the country should coordinate their itineraries with the relevant authorities and subject their journey to astringent journey management plan provided by a reputable private security contractor.
