10/17/2017 (Spain) - According to local media sources on Tuesday, 17 October, multiple demonstrations, rallies and widespread protests are expected throughout Catalonia following the controversial incarceration on charges of sedition of the leaders of the two main civil society groups in the autonomous region. Reports indicate that yesterday, shortly after the judicial ruling, thousands of people participated in candlelight processions in major cities including Gerona and Barcelona. Pro-independence local political figures consider the two arrested as political leaders and will reportedly keep mobilising thousands in large-scale protests.

Those in the autonomous community of Catalonia are advised to avoid the vicinity of protests and demonstrations in order to mitigate the risk of exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, opportunistic crime and police crowd control measures. Clients undertaking overland travel within Barcelona and other cities in the region are advised to review journey plans as a result of spontaneous demonstrations. Clients should closely monitor local media sources while deployed in Spain amid the current level of political tension.
