10/17/2017 (United States) - According to local media sources, the Governor of Florida has declared a 'state of emergency' for the city of Gainesville ahead of a speech by a prominent right-wing leader at the University of Florida on Thursday, 19 October. The speech is scheduled to take place at the Phillips Centre of the university, commencing at 1430hrs (1830 UTC). The appearance is predicted to draw a substantial counter-demonstration as well as a heavy security presence.

Those in Gainesville are advised to avoid the University of Florida on the aforementioned date due to potential unrest and heavy police presence. Travellers should remain clear of any large gatherings and political protests in order to minimise the risk of exposure to incidental violence and police crowd dispersal operations. Travellers should be mindful of an increased security presence in the immediate term, and are advised to heed any directives issued by authorities.
