10/17/2017 (Israel) - According to local media reports on Tuesday, 17 October, twelve ultra-Orthodox protesters have been arrested at two separate anti-draft demonstrations in Jerusalem and outside Tel Aviv. At Bnei Brak outside Tel Aviv, four protesters were arrested, while eight were arrested in Jerusalem where demonstrators blocked major roads near to the city's bus station. These protests were the latest in a series of demonstrations by ultra-Orthodox protesters over the arrest of members of the community for failure to report to Israel Defense Force (IDF) draft offices after the High Court of Justice removed a law that exempted ultra-Orthodox men engaged in religious study from military service.
Those in Israel are advised to avoid travel to the aforementioned areas in the immediate term due to the ongoing protests and increased security measures. Due to the risk of similar incidents elsewhere, travellers should exercise caution in the vicinity of flashpoints such as religious sites and security checkpoints. Travellers in Israel should monitor local media sources for developments and to remain abreast of the political situation for the duration of their stay in-country.
