Bus Driver Killed in Collision With Truck, Andhra Pradesh

10/17/2017 (India) - According to local media sources on Monday, 16 October, a bus driver has been killed and several passengers were injured after a bus hit a lorry on the National Highway near Payakaraopeta, Andhra Pradesh. According to local police, the bus was heading to Rajamahendravaram from Visakhapatnam when it hit the lorry at high speed at around 0510hrs (2340UTC Sunday, 15 October). Police are continuing investigations into the collision but initial reports suggest that the driver was asleep at the wheel and lost control of the vehicle causing the incident.

The incident highlights the high risk of road accidents in India. Vehicular accidents are relatively frequent in the country due to inadequate road maintenance in rural areas, poor driver discipline and limited enforcement of traffic rules.
