10/17/2017 (Sudan) - According to local media sources on Monday, 16 October, at least two people were killed and another six were injured after gunmen opened fire on the Amit common market in Abyei. No group has yet claimed the attack, but it is suspected that militias supported by the Sudanese government were responsible. Abyei is a contested area between Sudan and South Sudan, currently under special administrative status.

Clients in the Abyei Area are advised to exercise extreme caution given the risk of further fighting in the area and should review contingency and evacuation plans in case of a rapid deterioration in the local security environment. Travellers should monitor local media sources and liaise with in-country contacts for further updates on the situation in their particular area of operations and heed any directives issued by authorities. Travellers are advised to exercise caution when travelling outside of Khartoum due to the high risk of violent crime and military activity. All operationally-critical travel should be conducted in coordination with a trusted security provider following a comprehensive localised threat assessment.
