10/16/2017 (Egypt) - According to incoming unconfirmed social media reports on Monday, 16 October, violent clashes have broken out in central Arish. This is reported to be in response to a recent attack on a Coptic Christian church. The attacks come in the context of an ongoing issue of attacks on the Coptic community within both the Sinai and greater Egypt. Further information is awaited.

The incident highlights the elevated security threat from Islamist militancy in North Sinai. High-risk areas include Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah but attacks have spread to other areas of the governorate in recent months. Those with operationally-critical travel needs in the region should subject all movement to a location-specific threat assessment and strict security risk management procedures. Travellers should monitor local media sources for security-related updates and minimise time spent in the vicinity of security forces patrols and positions, as these are regularly targeted in attacks.
