10/16/2017 (Portugal) - Media reports on Monday, 16 October, indicate that at least three people have been killed in a series of wildfires across northern areas of the country. According to local authorities, two of the fatalities occurred in the Coimbra district town of Penacova while at least one other person was killed in the Serta area of the Castelo Branco district. As well as those killed, a further 25 people are believed to have been injured in the fires. The fires are reported to have forced the closure of numerous roads and railway lines across northern areas, the closed routes reportedly include three motorways heading to the coastal city of Porto. Around 5,300 firefighters are reported to be continuing efforts to tackle the more than 100 fires still blazing in the region.

Those in northern Portugal are advised to monitor local media sources for further fire-related updates and should heed any directives issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Those intending to conduct overland travel in the region in the immediate to medium term should anticipate significant overland travel disruption and factor this into itineraries, allowing additional time and planning alternative routes.
