10/16/2017 (Philippines) - Local media reports indicate that five fishermen were abducted by unidentified bandits on the evening of Sunday, 15 October, in the Pangutaran area of Sulu province. The fishermen were reportedly kidnapped whilst sheltering from poor weather in Port Poblacion when their boats were boarded by a group of bandits on two small motor vessels. The crew were reportedly removed from the two fishing vessels and taken to an unknown location in archipelago. It is currently unknown whether the kidnappers are affiliated with any group but Abu Sayyaf militants maintain a significant presence in Sulu province and continue to conduct abductions of security forces personnel and civilians in the region.

Those in Sulu province are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and to remain apprised of any associated security operations. To reduce the risk of kidnapping, travellers should maintain a low profile; keep travel itineraries discreet; vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles; and immediately report any suspicious activity to security forces. Travellers should be aware of the persistent threat from militant activity in various areas of the southern Philippines and should exercise a high degree of vigilance if travelling in the region.
