Flooding Hits Communities in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State

10/16/2017 (Nigeria) - Local media reports on Monday, 16 October, indicate that dozens of people have been temporarily displaced in the Bayelsa State's Yenagoa Local Government Area due to flooding. Several communities in the Biseni area are reported to have been affected by the flooding after a tributary of the River Niger known as Taylor Creek burst its banks. The communities sit in low-lying areas along the river and are prone to annual flooding during the wet season from May to November. Several other areas including Ikarama, Okordia and Kaiama are also reported to have been impacted by the flooding.

Those in Bayelsa State are advised to monitor local media sources for further flood-related updates and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Those with operations in the flood-affected areas should review contingency plans in order to minimise impact on business continuity. Travellers should anticipate significant weather-related disruption in the area in the immediate to medium term and should factor this into itineraries, allowing additional time and planning alternative routes where possible. Drivers should exercise a heightened degree of caution in flood affected areas due to likely hazardous conditions caused by flooding and debris and avoid driving through moving flood waters.
