10/16/2017 (Haiti) - According to reports from local media sources, protests opposing the passing of a controversial government budget for the forthcoming fiscal year are expected to occur on Tuesday, 17 October. Demonstrations can be expected in Port-au-Prince and other major urban centres. Following the passing of the contentious budget, violent protests occurred in the capital causing damage to property and disrupting commercial and transport activity. At least four people were injured in related protests in Port-au-Prince on 5 October, after an unidentified gunman opened fire on attendees at an anti-budget rally.

Those in Haiti are advised to remain clear of all demonstrations and large gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime, and incidental violence. Travellers should be mindful that peaceful protests can rapidly escalate into violence. Clients should be aware that significant travel disruption is likely to occur in the vicinity of demonstrations as protesters regularly block roads, which in the past has compromised access to Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP).
