Police Station Attacked in Solle, Loroum Province

10/16/2017 (Burkina Faso) - Local media reports indicate that a police station in the Titao area of the Nord region province of Loroum came under attack by unidentified militants in the early hours of Monday, 16 October. Several heavily armed attackers reportedly opened fire on the police station in Solle, close to the border with Mali, shortly after midnight (UTC) but it is currently unclear whether the incident has concluded. Burkina Faso's northern provinces have seen an increasing number of attacks in recent months by suspected Mali-based extremists and the newly-emerged Ansaru Islam militant group prompting an increase in security across the region. Attacks on schools, other civil infrastructure and security forces have been reported in the region along with kidnappings.
Travellers are advised to exercise a heightened level of caution in the Sahel and Nord regions in light of the recent attacks and should be aware of increased security operations in the region. Due to the high threat from militancy and criminal activity, all travel to areas of northern Burkina Faso should be subject to a thorough localised threat assessment and undertaken in coordination with a trusted security provider. Those in Burkina Faso should monitor local media sources for further updates on the situation in the region and to remain apprised of security-related developments in their particular area of operations.
