10/16/2017 (Mali) - Media reports indicate that a Tuareg militia leader was shot dead on Sunday, 15 October, in the Menaka area of the Gao region, close to the border with Niger. The Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MSA) officer was reportedly attacked as he was walking home on Sunday morning in a suspected targeted killing. It is currently unclear which group was behind the assassination but tensions between the MSA and the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) have been building in the region in recent months after the group returned to the area following the departure of Groupe Autodefense Touareg Imghad et Allies (GATIA) fighters from the region.

Those with operationally-critical travel requirements in Menaka and the Gao region should first conduct a thorough localised threat assessment and subject all movement to stringent security risk management procedures. Travellers are advised to liaise with security forces and local authorities to identify areas with ongoing security operations, particularly in the Menaka area following the latest incident. Contingency measures should also be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
