10/15/2017 (Austria) - Media sources report that the last polling stations will close at 1700hrs (1500 UTC) on Sunday, 15 October, with projections expected only minutes later. The controversial parliamentary election in Austria, with Sebastian Kurz of the People's Party (OVP) leading the polls, has seen a shift in politics since an election scandal hit Social Democrats resulting in the chairman stepping down from the parliamentary race. The OVP have repositioned themselves to the right with tougher legislation on migration expected. The election winner forms a government that will likely require a coalition with one of the two other main parties.
Clients are advised to anticipate potential localised disruption from the additional security measures in main cities. Travellers are advised that a final count is expected later in the evening, though large numbers of postal ballots could mean final results come on Monday and therefore further rallies could be likely. Monitor local media or contact your travel provider for more information. Furthermore, all travellers should maintain a heightened level of vigilance and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to security forces.
