10/15/2017 (Pakistan) - Local media reports on Sunday, 15 October, indicate that a child who was kidnapped in Quetta last week has been freed in a police hostage rescue operation. The boy had been abducted in the Arbab Karam Khan Road area of the city by a group of armed men who contacted his father demanding a ransom. Acting on a tip, police reportedly rescued the child on Friday night after raiding a house in the Faizabad area where he was being held. According to police sources, two suspected kidnappers were arrested in the operation and a number of items seized including two firearms, a motorcycle and several mobile telephones. Under interrogation, the arrested men reportedly admitted that there were a further five members of the kidnapping gang and police have since launched an operation to apprehend them. The incident highlights the risk of kidnap for ransom in Pakistan and Balochistan in particular. As well as abductions such as last weeks, express kidnappings in which victims are abducted and forced to withdraw money from various Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) have also been reported in Pakistani cities.

Those in Quetta are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and associated security operations. To reduce the risk of kidnapping, travellers should maintain a low profile; keep itineraries discreet; vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles; and report any suspicious activity to police as soon as possible. Overland road and foot movements should be restricted to daylight hours and conducted under strict security risk management protocols in consultation with a trusted security provider.
