Fatal Shooting at Stellenbosch Nightclub

10/15/2017 (South Africa) - According to reports from local media outlets on Saturday, 14 October, at least two people have been killed in a shooting inside a popular Stellenbosch nightclub. Reports indicate that two gunmen entered the Cubana nightclub on Plein Street at approximately 0001hrs (2201 UTC Friday) and appeared to be deliberately targeting an unidentified club patron, though a number of bystanders were also shot due to the gunmen firing indiscriminately.
Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Although levels of violent crime in Stellenbosch are lower than in some other South African cities, travellers should be aware that the risk of exposure to violent criminality is still pervasive. If travellers become embroiled or witness a dispute, leave the area immediately.
