10/15/2017 (Chile) - According to reports from local media outlets on Saturday, 14 October, the mayor of San Joaquin, in the Santiago metropolitan area, has called for an increased deployment of security personnel to the neighbourhood of La Legua. The district in south central Santiago has been troubled by the recent escalation of a turf war between two rival drug cartels operating in the area, with a significant rise in firearm incidents over the past several weeks.

Travellers in areas known for drug-related violence are advised to conduct travel in coordination with a reputable security provider and local authorities. Exercise a high level of situational awareness, maintain a low profile and avoid ostentatious displays of relative wealth in order to minimise the risk of exposure to opportunistic crime.
