10/15/2017 (Nigeria) - Local media reports on Saturday, 14 October, indicate that two suspected kidnappers have been shot dead by police in the Obosi area of Anambra state. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday as police launched an operation to rescue a woman abducted from a fuel station in the town on 11 October by four gunmen. The suspected kidnappers reportedly opened fire when they realised that they were being followed by police. Two of the gunmen were killed in the exchange of fire but at least two others were able to escape during the clash. The kidnapped women is believed to have been released by police but it is currently unclear whether she was travelling with the kidnappers at the time of the police intervention.

Due to the risk of kidnap for ransom in Nigeria, travellers are advised to exercise good situational awareness when travelling, especially in unfamiliar environments. In order to reduce the risk of kidnapping, travellers should maintain a low profile; keep travel itineraries discreet; and vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles. Any suspicious activity should be immediately reported to police. Overland travel in Nigeria should be subject to strict journey management protocols and undertaken in coordination with a trusted security provider.
