UPDATE: Civilian Killed in Violent Protests, following raid in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir

10/14/2017 (India) - According to local media reports on Saturday, 14 October, one civilian has been killed by security forces who fired live rounds at protesters after clashes erupted in Litter and adjacent villages of South Kashmir's Pulwama district. The protesters were spurred by an earlier raid which led to the deaths of two militants. It is also thought that up to 20 individuals were also injured in the clashes.

Those in the Pulwama district are advised to avoid the Litter area in the immediate term due to the ongoing security operations. Travellers should be aware of the potential for demonstrations in Litter and other areas in the medium term linked to the operations. Travellers should exercise a heightened level of caution in the medium term and monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Jammu and Kashmir state due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence and should minimise time spent in the vicinity of security forces patrols and positions as these may be targeted in militant attacks. Travellers should heed all directives issued by security forces and local authorities and observe any extraordinary security measures that may be in place, including curfews.
